Today in Hockey class, I learned that AR & MO are allowed to have different measurements than LA, AL, MS & FL. Why?

Today in Hockey class, I went to study the question "Who the phuc are the Habs?". They are the Montreal Canadiens https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal_Canadiens
The nickname comes from their nickname Les Habitants. Les Habitants is derived from "Habitants (French: [abitɑ̃]) were French settlers and the inhabitants of French origin who farmed the land along the two shores of the St. Lawrence River and Gulf in what is the present-day Province of Quebec in Canada." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habitants
Habitants had a variety of responsibilities to the seigneur of the land. All of it, fascinating shit. One responsibility was " Rent was typically set at an annual rate of 20 sols for every "arpent" of land."
An arpent https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arpent is " Historically, in North America, 1 (square) arpent (arpent carré), also known as a French acre, was 180 French feet × 180 French feet = 32,400 French square feet = about 3419 square metres = about 0.845 English acres. Certain U.S. states have official definitions of the arpent which vary slightly:
In Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, the official conversion is 1 arpent = 0.84628 acres (3,424.8 square metres).[1]
In Arkansas and Missouri, the official conversion is 1 arpent = 0.8507 acres (3,443 square metres).[2]"
Now this vexes me greatly. Why are states allowed to have different units of measurement? I don't care if an arpent is archaic, it should be the same everywhere in the US of A.
I think I am going to learn a lot of disturbing shit in Hockey class.
