They might have changed it but last I saw there was a $5 surcharge for buying tickets from the conductor on board. Should be vending machines there at the station. -- (edited)

Just make sure you buy a ticket to New York Penn, not Newark Penn*. :)
*Unless you’re switching to the PATH to go downtown, of course.
