Also note that the credit covers a time period. It doesn't instantly drop in half on the 200,000th (example) sale. It

Drops on a certain date (I think the next month after hitting its target, but may be wrong), then the next tier lasts for 6 months, then it drops in half and lasts another 6 months, then it ends.
So long as you purchased before the drop to the next tier, even if it was the 250,000th sale, you'd get the credit.
The 200,000th sale (example) is the trigger to initiate sunset, not a hard limit on how many credits the IRS will honor.
