I actually have something like this (but not nearly as subtle) at the bottom of our stairs leading upstairs. I put it in when our dog was getting old -- (edited)

because she would sleep at the bottom of the stairs and we didn't want to trip on her. They're motion activated so when we walk up/down the stairs they turn on
They are, unfortunately, a harsh white LED light
