the farthest distance between teams in the EPL is about the distance from Boston to Philadelphia. And the barrier to starting a new soccer club is much much smaller than starting a football or baseball team. Basketball is probably closest in its ability to emulate what world soccer does.
There are definitely problems with soccer's "pay to win" model right now, but it's built on a backbone that fans aren't willing to throw away, even the teams that are guaranteeing themselves a spot. They also know that if the ESL happens, American-style team movements aren't out of the realm either.
