The difference is that cruise can be engaged most anywhere because it's just speed. It's a single click of the right stalk. AP is a double click and

That would engage lane keeping and would need to see lane lines to even allow its activation.


IOW what was in use is the same thing you'd find on any other car with cruise control and using it in those circumstances would've resulted in the same outcome.
