You might look at the medications she's on and see if there is an interaction causing her confusion/memory loss. A lot of what is considered early

dementia/Alzheimer's or just age related forgetfulness has found to actually be due to the interactions between medications. Older people are often on so many, sometimes their doctor doesn't know about all of them or missed it. There's a lot of articles about it, but this one lists some of the drugs that cause memory issues.
