Everybody's doing this for third place behind Netflix and Disney.

Disney's place in the market is better than Netflix's long-term due to IP.

Netflix has a prohibitive lead in this marathon, though.

The HBO Max/Discovery thing is all about survival in an oligopoly.

This move is more about Amazon saying, "Well, if we're spending 11 figures on content this year anyway, we might as well buy thousands of movies and TV shows."

The hidden benefit here is marrying the Hobbit franchise with the upcoming TV show.
