Meh. Shrek was the anti-lead, sarcastic introverted character that hadn't been presented yet in animated films.

Just because it was sophomoric and appealed to both kids and adults doesn't mean it wasn't a very enjoyable and important film at the time.
It had stupid jokes (and some smart ones), but it was funny.
