I suspect the graves are more in the way of

"whoops another one died, just bury them and tell everyone they went home"

disease, neglect and indifference more than murder. I wouldn't rule it out completely, for every case just seems unlikely. They're being described as "unmarked burial fields" as opposed to a mass grave, and it would be over the lifetime of the school.
