In this instance it was necessary to show the "full" cycle of life for this amazing creature.
We saw it overcome threats earlier - riding that shark like a fucking cowboy was a particular favorite moment - but after it has reproduced and completed its life mission, it (almost willingly) gives itself back to nature via becoming shark food. It's sad but also reinforces that nature is uncompromising and doesn't play favorites - even if we humans do.
