I'm considering going through Verizon's Bring Your Own Phone promo to get a $450 eGift card, and at least one thing perplexes me.

The promo is only available if you open a new phone line. So I would open the new phone line, get the gift card, and then cancel my old phone line. What good does that serve Verizon, instead of just offering a promo for upgrading a data plan? Are they trying to get people off of existing phone prefixes or something?
