I once went to a collectible store to buy a Ken Griffey Jr. Upper Deck rookie card. -- (edited)

The price at the time was about $175. I'd coveted it for a while. Once, after a particularly good commission check, I treated myself. I bought the card and took it home.

My wife, who had no interest in baseball cards, immediately noticed something I didn't. The card, which I hadn't taken out of the case yet, had a scratch down the face.

Annoyed, I returned it to the collectible store. The owner predictably tried to act like I'd done something at first before pretending like he suddenly remembered the card had a flaw.

Since others were watching -- it was a popular store at the time -- he offered me a make-good. He gave me a Frank Thomas rookie card and took back the Junior card.

I was just thinking about that tonight. The Thomas card, which I honestly have no idea whether I still have or not, is apparently worth $2,250. The Junior card sells for about $4,000.

Twenty five years later, I'm annoyed all over again.
