My nephew never really had any ear infections, but on every checkup his ped would tell my sister that his eardrums were bulging and he give her a decongestent and go on. Tim didn't talk on time and when he did it was pretty unintelligible. Finally, when he was 4 1/2, Blue Cross approved a visit to a pediatric ENT doc, where it was discovered he was almost totally deaf. He got tubes 2 days later, but up to 50% of his hearing is gone. The ENT doc has said there is a surgery that could just about restore full hearing, but again, Blue Cross won't approve payment. The reason--they consider it experimental and their standards say that 50% hearing is "good enough".
My sister is so freaking pissed off. If he were on Medicaid, it would be covered. It's ridiculous.
