They fall into the ego trap Chris Davis did. Teams tell him, "We would love for you to get 4 bunt singles each game. Then you'd never hit home runs!"
Which makes the hitter think, "Oooh, I'm so dangerous that they'd rather me just be on base 4 times. So, I'm gonna keep swinging for the fences." So, they just continue to happily hit into the shift. Meanwhile the truth is that team knows lefties are far less dangerous if they just pull everything.
This problem didn't exist 40 years ago, not just because people didn't shift, but because players knew how to hit the ball the other way. They practiced it. They learned how to inside out a pitch on the inner part of the plate, or go with a pitch on the outside. Players just don't do that anymore, and teams have adjusted.
I think it's very similar to what you're saying with free throws. Players just can't around their own ego to learn a new skillset.
