This is significant and an aspect of the music industry I didn't really know about.

Some artists who signed with Sony years ago still owed Sony money (because when you sign a record contract, somehow you end up in debt... I know, I know... marketing, promotion, studio time, etc.) And so Sony was using any revenue from album sales to pay down that debt. Now they're forgiving any remaining debt and putting part of that revenue into a fund that will pass the money to the artists.
