FWIW, they are both about the same as they were from what I've seen.

Thank God they are weathering the storm. But they are both the type of hotel that just trudges on and on and on by its lonesome no matter how much the world changes.
The Benson is closer to the downtown conflict zone (but still safely far from it) if that makes a difference.
If you would like something truly local, check out the McMennamin's hotels in the area, especially Kennedy School. If you don't mind being away from downtown -- and I'm planning to be your valet + driver while you're here -- Kennedy School is a fantastic gem of a place to stay.
The Sentinel Hotel and McMennamin's Crystal are both cool independent hotels.
If you really want to treat yourself, look at the Lucia or
the Hotel Vintage. There was a rumor that Kimpton was going to buy one of them, though, so they might not be independent anymore.
