Regardless of religious affiliation or not, it's one of the most influential books in the western canon.

Arguably, the most influential. It would make sense that a 'learned' person would be at least somewhat knowledgeable about it (Certainly, great knowledge of the Bible is not a precursor for religious believe and vice versa)
