LYC: Underworld report *spoilers* -- (edited)
It wasn't bad but neither was the first Wrong Turn ;-)
I either wasn't in the mood or wasn't prepared or something....as I found it surprisingly dense for what I guess is supposed to be Vampires Vs Werewolves with a Matrix sensibility.
Like, there's a lot of lore going on and there's more and more of it. There's even a Selene in a library scene with more voice over. Oh...and then the guy from the werewolf side who gets tortured for the purpose of what seems like another 5 minutes of exposition.
So I've only ever watched one other series of films that had vampires and werewolves uh...Twilight but what is it with the vampire on vampire violence with the werewolves caught in between. That was Twilight to some extent and it is definitely Underworld
The more that movie went on the more that I admired Kate Beckinsdale's Selene's dedication to the Trinity look. All the rest of the vampires are dressed in goth or Victorian or other period dress. Selene is always in PVC or really shiny leather or whatever the heck that shiny skinsuit is
Where the heck does this movie take place? I thought it was in some random big US city based on the police uniforms and car, to some extent the subway (so NYC?). But the cast is predominantly British. Or Eastern European per the credits. Then there's a critical scene that I swear happens on the Hogworth's Express.
Selene drives a Jaguar at one point and with all the Brits and European style license plates, I wondered if it was UK so I was waiting to see which side of the road they drive on. I swear that once I was looking for that there was only ever a single car on the single lane roads / alleyways. Like a back lot or something *facepalm*
And it is Scott Speedman from Felicity and he did get bigger. I can go with that but why does Selene seemingly instantly love this rando American? Ok, ok, he saved her life so yeah, he gets a second look.
I also know that he's not just any human rando but still other than plot motivation why does she seemingly out of nowhere fall for him?
I will grant that it could be entirely gender bias as I totally get why he falls for her...well except he kind of doesn't? He's more looking for answers as to why the Trinity knock off with a British accent (oh dear....I need a moment after that thought in abstract) is so interested in him as opposed to actually being interested in the Trinity knock off.
Ok, so he got bit by a werewolf so he's got other stuff going on...
A werewolf played by Michael Sheen! Who's introduced as the antagonist but is actually the long put out by vampires, utterly wronged, saw his wife go up in flames due to sunlight kind of good guy.
Bill Nighy is in this! Introduced as the kindly vampire elder but actually the cruel dicksih, vampire behind the entire vampire / werewolf war. A guy so bigoted (gotta preserve that pure vampire line) that he's the one who sent werewolf's wife in sunlight induced flame...a vampire who is...wait for it...his daughter. Or was at least
The other notable Brit in this (well notable to me) is the live action Miss Penelope: Sofia Myles. I've got to watch some of her movies as I gotta believe I should know her from more than the Thunderbirds and now Underworld.
and what happened to her vampire anyway? Best I know she kind of slipped away while the full on vamp on vamp war broke out? Maybe she'll be back?
But lots of guns, a moment where Uncle Billy pulls out this insane long sword from apparently no where, Scott Speedman turning really dark purple? blue? cause I know they didn't turn him black in his transformation as the hybrid vamp/werewolf, variation on trust fall (what the hell type of half assed rescue was that anyway Selene, like literally half a rescue)
Oh and I can't figure out if the cast is doing some type of vampire accent on top of their British accents or if that's how they ended sounding as tried to deliver their lines with prosthetic teeth in place 8-)
The sequels will have to wait a bit as I figured out that Hulu has Season 2 of Food Wars so that's definitely taking priority
