29 was his high from when he was still a full time pitcher but they didn't play him every day when he wasn't pitching.

It wasn't until 1919 that they started to bat him more often and pitch him less. Before that the most plate appearances he had in a season was in 1918 at 382.
The next year they pitched him much less, just a handful of games, and he had a full season at the plate. He hit 54 that year which was his first for the Yankees.
