The idea that this was gonna be a Switch Pro never made sense to me.

That was always a dream by spec thirsty gamers. Nintendo always makes incremental upgrades to their handhelds (GameBoy, DS Lite, New 3DS) mid-generation.
This was just a hardware upgrade because the screen and processor were going end of life.
