The whole strategy revolves around the pitcher being a horrible hitter.

It's basically, "Look at all these inventive ways we made to make this suck less!"
I'd imagine that if in the NFL the NFC historically had kickers also be offensive lineman, there'd be a lot of unique strategies around keeping the QB safe despite the kicker not being able to block a 260 pound defensive end. Still wouldn't make it better. It'd just be covering up for a clear deficiency.
