They have all said that the wax is important and necessary and you injure yourself by sticking the q-tip in there.

It's fine for the outside of the ear, but not the inside. If you get a lot of build-up that isn't normal, it's something you generally have to visit an ear, nose and throat doctor to have cleaned (and I've done this before).
