In response to "Yes and no." by spamlet

On fixing errors, one year I had the tiniest error on my form and correcting it required submitting a whole new 1040X.

The error was that I forget the parentheses on a negative number in one line. I carried through the numbers correctly, i.e. as a negative, but the IRS reversed my internal correction and demanded more money for unpaid taxes.

The lady on the helpline was actually super friendly and helpful and tried to get the computer system to accept a manual change of the error, but it was not equipped to allow that, so refiling was the only option other than paying the money I didn't owe.
