It's awkward scheduling to be playing a tournament in grueling conditions halfway around the world a month before the US Open

Many of the US Open contenders (Zverev, Tsitsipas, Medvedev) also played in the Olympics so that will even out, but others (Nadal, Berrettini) are doing the more traditional preparation and are already in the US training and playing warm up tournaments in North America.

The turnaround from French to Wimbledon to Olympics to US Open is kind of brutal. In a normal year there is a bit of a lull in the schedule after Wimbledon to recover that the Olympics took away this year.
