In response to "As a parent, you did right by your kids and their future. As a country, I'm of the mind we should do right by our citizens and their future" by oblique

"No other options" ... community college can be a great bargain, knocking out core/elective classes before you go elsewhere to pay for a name school

on your degree. Likewise there are plenty of lower cost choices for those who "just need a degree" to qualify for higher level jobs.

I understand the issue, and I empathize with many. I want the people who are getting bailed out to have had some skin in the game and to have made smart choices along the way.

Going to a B10 school to get an art history degree (or pick your punching bag ... teaching, journalism, etc). and then being dismayed that your professional income can't justify the 6-figure debt load you've taken on ... that's very difficult for me to get behind. Why did you make such a dumb decision in the first place, what did you think was going to happen?

No offense intended to anyone who is/was in this type of situation for themselves or their kids.

Subsidizing higher education is one thing. Subsidizing poor decision making is entirely another.
