"I had to, you should have to, too" is a fairly selfish approach.
Someone dug the ditch and laid the railroad and paved the roads - you reap the benefits of those efforts as their descendants.
We've progressed to where people can receive higher learning. We share in that cost, and as a global community, we are better off for that.
