Definitely easier and in many cases just as valuable. There are some notable exceptions especially with Chase where I can redeem points

at 1.5x their normal value while earning them at the same 2% rate you might get on cash back cards (I use the Chase Freedom for that).
Spending 25k on a 2% card gets you $500
Spending 25k on my chase card gets me $500 or 50k points
I can turn around and redeem 25k points to 25k miles at United and use those 25k points to get a $500 flight
So even just doing miles, I can turn 25k in spending into $1000 worth of flights vs. $500 cash back.
