Some quick observations about The Suicide Squad… (spoilers) -- (edited)

Yes, James Gunn will go back to what works for him. King Shark and Weasel? A classic rock soundtrack? Didn’t I see that in Guardians of the Galaxy? Whatever. It works.

The movie is very self aware. It brings back characters from the past movie but tells us from the very start that we’re separating ourselves from that movie. Captain Boomerang? Boom! Dead! You like Harley? OK, we’ll keep her. Rick Flag? We’re going to redeem him… but don’t get too attached. The most onerous scene from the first movie, I’d say, is when Waller kills her entire crew for no apparent good reason. So how do we fix that? Mutiny by her new crew, and a golf club to the head.

TONS of cameos, which are appreciated.

Even calling one of the “heroes” Ratcatcher 2 is a nod to how DC tends to create generations of heroes and villains.

Digging up Bloodsport as the protagonist is a deep cut. He’s never been a big villain in the DCU. But, again, it works.

I feel Capaldi is underused as the Thinker. He doesn’t do a lot of super-thinking, considering all his hardware.

I will point out that there was a lot apprehension when we got set photos all those months ago. People didn’t like the goofy Peacemaker costume. People didn’t like the dayglo colors on the set (which now clearly had something to do with Polka Dot Man). Have faith, people. It was as fun a movie as I’ve seen in a long time.
