DC has a lot of canonical history (what's called "continuity" by nerds like you and me). Which is why New 52 failed.

And I'm all for that. I became a historian of DC continuity and then they decided, "Nah, we don't need all that. Let's reset." When DC realizes how valuable that continuity is, that's when they're at their best. And that's what Marvel's been borrowing for a couple of decades now, which is what's made them the powerhouse they are now. Since they trashed Heroes Reborn and decided to weave a move integrated Marvel universe, the company-wide stories - where everything is connected - have been a master class in weaving continuity.
