Jess,
Okay, you asked. A bottle of wine is fine.
That said, ABSOLUTELY NOT white Zinfandel and NOT an American
Chardonnay.
FOR A WHITE WINE: White Burgundy (which is an un-oaked Chardonnay from
France) is nice, as are Chardonnays from Australia (also un-oaked).
Chardonnay is actually a nice wine, but the American vineyards over-oak
the wine by throwing oak chips into the wine instead of putting it into
oak barrels (chips are cheaper), so American Chardonnay generally stinks
by comparison with French, Australian, or New Zealand chardonnays.
FOR A RED WINE: a South American Malbec (Chile or Argentina), an
Australian Shiraz from the McLaren Vale or Barossa Vale (not Yellow
Tail), or an Australian Cabernet, Cabernet/Shiraz, or Cabernet/something
blend. Penfold's is always a reliable vineyard. Do not get a
"Firebolt" Shiraz, which I believe is from the D'Arenberg vineyard in
the McLaren Vale.
A French Red Burgundy (a Cabernet blend) is fine too, but I know the
Australian vineyards better (I've been there).
There is a Total Wines near Trader Joe's in the shopping center on the
north-east corner of the Rt. 123 (Little River Turnpike) and Nutley
street intersection, about three miles east of our house. They have a
great selection.
If you go to Total Wines, ask for "Jean Paul." He's usually there.
He's an older French guy and will square you away on any type of French
wine. Just talking to him is worth a visit.
I left the choice of white or red up to you. We will drink it
regardless, although maybe not Sunday. :)
