Assume Newsom survives. If there's a "reasonable" R that wins the second portion then he gets legitimacy for the next proper election -- (edited)

Whereas a whackadoo incumbent is easier to beat if Newsom loses the recall.
I'm not saying I agree with this logic but that's the calculus of it.
