You're both right. Vaccines teach the body to attack the virus more quickly than the body would if it encountered the virus on its own. So vaccinated -- (edited)

Folks start fighting the virus before it can reach the levels that create serious or deadly symptoms and help greatly reduce the time an infected person can be infectious to others.
The vaccine reduces symptoms so it often appears that it prevents infection because the body beats it back with antibodies before symptoms appear.
