As a host, I felt at the time that he was fine, but this was the wrong game show setting for him.

That Ringer article echoed my feelings with the story about his Price Is Right audition where he was described as too game show hosty. Just not a good fit for the more sedate Jeopardy.
Something lighter and glitzier would probably suit him well, like Tic Tac Dough or Card Sharks.
