He could chide people for being wrong without sounding mean, without being cruel.

He was such a genial guy, with a comforting voice and delivery, that any replacement is going to need a big adjustment.

But they tried to go with Generic White Guy and got a lot of Generic White Guy baggage.

They don't really need a new permanent host, IMO. Keep bringing in new people for short stints. Maybe one will click in an unexpected way. But distance from Trebek's death will help any new permanent host be able to give it their signature more easily because they'll also be compared to all the other guest hosts, not just Alex.
