To be fair, the employees at the Verizon store don’t know how much their plans cost.

These peons basically exist to press the buttons on the point of sales system for the people who are too afraid to press the buttons on the web site. A price won’t come up until you’ve reached the check-out, and even then, it’s not a final verifiable price. The first month’s price usually differs from the regular monthly price because of numerous one-time fees, so it’s difficult to get someone to quote you an actual number. It’s no different than any other mobile plan or cable subscription. It’s intentionally opaque to keep you from comparison shopping and from making informed decisions.

Your best bet is a flat rate pre-paid plan from one of the subsidiaries like Cricket or Mint Mobile or Metro.
