I always feel bad discarding drives (and we've done that with a lot of them at work) but I don't think I would but a new or expansion NAS

drives are kinda cheap and do eventually wear out so replacing them is just what happens. The good argument I've heard for expansion vs. increasing disk size is that the rebuild time on larger drives is, obviously, significantly bigger so your "danger time" while rebuilding is extended.
So if you want to keep your risk of total failure low, use smaller drives.
