What's meant to happen - sympathy votes for conservative moderates? When the party is at the same time reaching out to those same voters?
The experience in Australia is that the conservative party moved further to the right, and more worryingly, to the authoritarian side of politics, and the far-right party is in Parliament. (In the Senate, which would not happen in Canada because appointments, but can in Australia because of how the electoral system is structured)
