responded in different ways.
The Republican response to the civil rights movement was the Southern strategy. The response to the feminist movement has been to court the evangelical vote. As left wing parties adopted right wing economics in the 90s, they left behind a lot of people who are now the angry far-right voters.
I don't think you can stick a moderate leader on top of a conservative party that adopts strategies like these by design and then say "everything's OK, he's a moderate and shouldn't be demonised"
