engineering was spot on where I did not get pulled out of the narrative because the vocals felt like the actors weren't singing them. Even the little things like someone wiping their face during a song was heard (I saw it in a Dolby theater) adding to the immersion. Yes, the lead is not a likable character which is dramatically evident on the screen vs. a stage production but I didn't feel like it was a detriment. There is a strong message to the story that I thought came through loud and clear.
