Only Murders - weird observation (spoilers) -- (edited)

Charles says he was with his ex, Emma, and she brought 7-year old Lucy into his life. Then he starts bonding with Lucy via making her a favorite omelette. He says that Emma did not like this bonding at all, and then later says he surprised Emma when he booked a family cruise (to include Lucy) instead of a couples cruise. Lastly he says that while at a port of call, he and Lucy wanted to stay on the ship while Emma insisted Lucy go ashore with her, and then they flew home from there, leaving Charles behind.
It's all presented as if Emma is jealous of the perfectly innocent relationship between Charles and Lucy, and I'm sure that's all it is.
However
I get a weird radar ping about this ... like, from Emma's perspective was she concerned about a predatory relationship and was "rescuing" Lucy from Charles, the cruise and his spending time alone with Lucy and without Emma being the last straw.
It would be thematically inconsistent if that were the actual story - the show clearly wants to present Charles sympathetically and Emma not, so I'm mostly just pointing out how odd the whole thing came across unintentionally and how it creeped me out a bit.
