I always did find it odd not needing ID to vote in Maryland.

You would just sign by your name on the voter role, but usually it would go something like this:
Election Worker: Name
Me: I'd say my name.
Election Worker starts turning pages.
Then I see my name and point to it and say "That's me."
Then the Election Worker would say okay and have me sign and I would go vote.
