so if I wanted to create basically a home automation control device, would a cheap kindle fire be a good idea?

I tried to do it with a really old Ipad, but the device itself just keep crashing.
basically there is a website that I can use to setup my menu of options of things. I think it would be nice to have in my new office, since the light switches for most of the basement are at the top of the stairs, so I would like the ability to remotely turn them on and off as I need.
yes I have an app on my phone, but this seems like a better idea. could connect it to my eufy doorbell so I can see who is at the front door, etc.
