Yeah, the OP is mistaken regarding the ships’ location, but the actual answer is still pretty cool if the replies are to be believed. -- (edited)

Those boats were apparently sunk by the US to establish a harbor on Iwo Jima. The volcano island that is erupting is further north along the same chain.
