And finally today in local news, a 89-unit housing complex for those aged out of foster care has broken ground.

The Sunset Lofts complex at 3103 McKinney will provide on-site services to residents, including case management, education and employment assistance and counseling services. It will be open to adults 18 to 25 years old who have aged out of the foster care system.

“This is the fulfillment of a dream we have had for more than a decade,” Dr. Adriana Tamez, director of the Tejano Center, said in a statement. “There is a great need among youth aging out of foster care, and now Tejano Center will be at the forefront of supporting these youth.

Tejano Center spokesman John Cisneros said foster children who turn 18 are at high risk for homelessness; Sunset Lofts aims to provide a place for these young adults to build a stable future.

“They have no job training and in many cases haven’t completed their education,” Cisneros said. “Their possibilities are very limited, so the idea is to attack that and have a positive impact.”

Residents could pay subsidized rent if they have a job, Cisneros said, or none at all if they do not. He described the facility as similar to a college dormitory, where young adults can live semi-independently while having access to services all under one roof.

The Tejano Center expects construction will be complete by December 2022.
