spice made hyper space travel possible, or at least safer when you have fewer ships crashing into someone's planet

and/or

they did away with computers (like huh?) for I forget, skynet terminator reasons? and developed hyper intellegent Mentats who were human computers... but they had them before and maybe established space travel already and it was the spice that allowed them to subdue the computers
