In response to "I'm preparing the 90 day review for a recent hire in my department. Honestly, he's doing great. I'm struggling to come up with an "Areas in need of" by kilbooooo!

Any timeliness issues? Is he too independent from the team? Does he lack knowledge in some obscure, but still tangentially related area?

I had similar situations with my team in the last job. Each of them was better than me in some aspects of the job, and most were perfectly capable everywhere else.

But we had the best performance assessment system that the 1990's could offer, so I had to come up with three areas of improvement each year.

So I would add something like "_______________ was three minutes late to our team meeting last February, and as a corrective action, _____________ will prepare a three-minute report on the importance of timeliness to share with the team at our next February meeting." (note that we did performance appraisals in August each year)

Or "__________________ needs to improve their knowledge and understanding of the EIS process, and as a corrective action, they will seek information and guidance from the government affairs representative for Weyland-Yutani Engineering, one of the consulting firms working on the Port of Portland Superfund site" (essentially giving them an afternoon to hang out with some folks on a river tour of the site)

Or "_________________ consistently demonstrates reasonable independence on the job, but could strive for a better balance of independent judgment and seeking assistance from colleagues around the office; as a corrective action, ____ ____________ will attend 14 hours of professional development, education, and training on working with teams over the next three months" (because they were seeking a team management certification anyway)
