Thoughts inside. (spoils) -- (edited)

I do feel like if I knew the books I might have felt differently about it to a degree, but my issues were:

1) I think there was too much that they were trying to do without enough background. I'm all for not being spoonfed exposition, but there was a lot happening and I felt like I often didn't follow the purposes of full motivations of the actions of the different factions and some individuals, unless I just assumed pretty standard tropes for these kinds of movies. So in some ways it was either to inscrutable or too obvious for me and in neither case fleshed out enough to make me care.

2) Other than Jason Momoa and Javier Bardem, I wasn't really drawn to any characters. Not sure if that's the writing or the acting.

3) I love Hans Zimmer but I hated the soundtrack. It was just super loud droning for the most part that was endless and often obscured dialogue. I realized that ultimately my favorite scene may have been when TC fights the Freman guy just because it was quiet and you could engage more with the scene and characters.

4) I was kind of annoyed by the factions technology and use of it. They have all this technology to travel the planets and still fight with swords? It just seemed kind of absurd to me.

Ultimately I understand I'm in the minority here, but I feel like the story may just be too big for the movie. It could use smaller bites maybe. It felt endless and I couldn't wait to get away from the soundtrack. Just my .02
