That's the beauty of it. There's always a new interpretation. Anything counterfactual is just evidence of the conspiracy to keep it quiet.

I read something a little while ago (I'll see if I can find it) examining why death cults can survive after the stated doomsday passes without it happening. Basically it comes down to people being so invested that they can't face the reality of it not being true. It means their whole belief system and a chunk of their lives was a lie and wasted.
