Usually people don't officially name a legal guardian because in most cases family would assume care of the kids.
In the case of my friends, the BFF has a brother who is an alcoholic and an elderly father. She has no first cousins. She has two elderly aunts and that's it.
Her spouse is estranged from the family for very good reason.
Spouse asked if I would be the legal guardian several years ago and I said yes. I don't regret it because I love the kids. The older one is a nightmare. I knew that when I said yes. I made that choice.
